Side sewn binding is a robust option that can be applied to both hardcover and certain softcover books, providing an added level of durability and strength to your publications. At Universal Bookbindery, we recognize that the choice of paper and its thickness plays a crucial role in determining the feasibility of side sewing; generally, we cannot side sew books thicker than 1/4 inch, and in some cases, less, depending on the paper type. While this method yields a sturdy book, it’s important to note that it may not be as easy to read as the more traditional Smyth sewn style. Additionally, side sewn books require a wider hinge on the cover to accommodate the binding process, with the thread typically spaced 1/4 inch away from the spine, running from the head to the tail. This binding technique offers an excellent solution for those seeking durability while still maintaining a distinctive look for their books.
